PRNewswire - December 1, 2008
December 1 is World AIDS Day, a day of awareness and outreach to help people worldwide understand the impact of HIV/AIDS. A central theme for World AIDS Day 2008 is You Can Make a Difference and the focus is two-fold, that of bringing people together to talk about HIV as well as helping dispel the myths and misconceptions about HIV.
The Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa's (FHSSA) partnering initiative links African hospices and palliative care providers with American hospices and organizations for support, financial assistance, and technical assistance. Through FHSSA's partnering initiative, 75 U.S. organizations in 27 states are partnered with a hospice in one of 16 African countries. These U.S. and African care providers have joined together to make a real difference for those suffering with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life threatening illnesses.
In many countries in Africa there is little or no access to adequate pain medication, little or no access to hospice and palliative care, and desperate situations of suffering, stigma, poverty, and isolation. This is particularly acute for women and children. Yet FHSSA's partners are doing what they can to make a profound difference and on World AIDS Day, FHSSA is proud to announce the addition of six new hospice partnerships:
*Evercare Hospice and Palliative Care in Virginia with Evangelical Lutheran Church AIDS Programme, the first in-country partnership in Namibia
*United Hospice of Rockland County in New York with Choice Trust in South Africa
*VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Brevard in Florida with St. Francis Kouga Hospice in South Africa
*VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Cincinnati in Ohio with Ripples Health Care in Ghana
*VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Miami/Dade in Florida with Christian Medical Service and Relief in South Africa
*VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, Inland Empire Program of San Bernardino in California with Hope Life Cooperation, the first in-country partnership in The Gambia
