AIDS Action Committee Annual Meeting Reports Success, Lauds Commitment, Invokes 10-Year Challenge

PRNewswire - November 10, 2006

BOSTON, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- At its annual meeting today, AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, Inc. (AAC) reported its 2006 results, inaugurated "Commitment to Action" Awards, highlighted past year challenges and solutions regarding HIV/AIDS in Massachusetts and issued its annual report, "Inspired Action." Rebecca Haag, Executive Director, AAC, urged attendees to envision and build a nation without HIV/AIDS in 10 years.

"We didn't ask for this epidemic, but it came on our watch," said Ms. Haag. It is up to us to reengage in the battle, to apply the same high standards to ending it as we do to everything else in our busy, daily lives. It is up to us; we simply cannot tolerate the suggestion that we pass this enormous burden to the next generation. We are much better than that."

Financially, the agency reported a net increase in assets in FY06 over FY05 and improved efficiencies in development by streamlining costs and increasing private dollars.

"Commitment to Action" awards recognized companies that have dedicated specific efforts to AAC's work in HIV/AIDS. Awardees are: Sappi Fine Paper NA, WCVB-TV, Whole Foods Market, Casual Male and the TJX Foundation. Ms. Ronni Hagen, CEO of Sappi Fine Paper North America said that a few Boston employees were inspired by its South Africa-based headquarters offering an employee benefit of coffins due to the HIV/AIDS death rate there. In 2004, they created a one-day, public, silent auction in their lobby to raise $500 but raised $10,000. In 2005 they raised more than $22,000. The goal in 2006 is $44,000. Its Maine employees will participate in the World AIDS Day auction at 225 Franklin St. (Dec. 1, 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.). WCVB-TV and meteorologist David Brown are integral to AAC's efforts to promote the AIDS Walk, which met its 2006 goal of $1.2 million. Chuck Olivieri and Whole Foods Market support all AAC events. Corporate Sponsor Casual Male fields among the largest Walk teams. The TJX Foundation's support extends beyond 15 years.

AAC announced Macy's as Presenting Sponsor of AIDS Walk Boston 2007 and recognized Robin Reibel, Vice President of Macy's East.
