MedMira Donates Rapid HIV Tests In China: Supports National Government HIV Prevention Strategy

PRNewswire - October 27, 2004

HALIFAX, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - MedMira Inc. ("MedMira") (TSX Venture: MIR, NASDAQ:MMIRF) the global market leader in flow-through diagnostics for infectious diseases, announced today that it has made donations of 25,000 MiraWell(TM) Rapid HIV Tests to two organizations in the People's Republic of China. These donations are part of the company's ongoing marketing strategy to increase its product awareness within China. MedMira donated 20,000 tests to the Chinese Foundation for Prevention of STD and AIDS (China-FPSA) in Beijing and 5,000 tests to the Department of Health in the municipality of Chongqing, that will be used to support the Chinese federal government's extensive country-wide HIV prevention strategy.

Stephen Sham, Chairman and CEO of MedMira said, "Over the past few years, MedMira has focused substantial efforts into gaining regulatory approval and opening the market channels in China for our rapid HIV test." Sham continued, "Not only have we succeeded in establishing an intricate sales network, but our MiraWell(TM) Rapid HIV Test is becoming a well-known diagnostic tool in China's battle against HIV/AIDS. We are extremely pleased to collaborate with these distinguished agencies by providing the highest quality tests which will make a difference in the front line of preventing HIV transmission."

The China-FPSA donation was made during a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, an honor of great magnitude for a foreign company. Among the distinguished attendees at the celebration was the former Minister of Health of China, Dr. Xinzhong Qian, who is currently the Honorary President of the China-FPSA. During the ceremony, the honorable former Minister of Health spoke of the MiraWell(TM) Rapid HIV Test as, "...the needed fire on a cold winter's night", in reference to the product's high quality, accuracy and 3-minute test results. The China-FPSA plans to dispatch MedMira's rapid HIV tests to the areas that will most benefit the Chinese population.

The ceremony was also attended by government officials, key representatives from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), UNAIDS representatives, non-government AIDS healthcare organizations (NGOs), and prominent medical professionals.

The Department of Health for the municipality of Chongqing serves a population of approximately 31 million, and will use the donated tests to introduce MedMira's unique technology platform to small clinics, blood collection centers and hospital laboratories throughout the region. The donation was accepted by CDC representatives from the city of Chongqing. China has been reported to be battling one of the most rapidly increasing HIV infection rates in the world (rising 30% yearly since 1998). It is currently estimated that 1 million Chinese are HIV- infected and that, without intervention, China can anticipate up to 10 million HIV-infected and 260,000 orphans by 2010.
