"As a leader in the development of products with global health impact in the area of HIV, Biosyn is extremely pleased to receive this funding commitment from IPM," said Anne-Marie Corner, President & CEO of Biosyn. "These funds, combined with the previously announced $10 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, will help to ensure the rapid advancement of cyanovirin over the next several years."
Triggers for IPM payments to Biosyn include, among other things, production capacity and cost, preclinical, and regulatory milestones. "We are pleased to partner with Biosyn in this effort," noted Dr. Zeda Rosenberg, IPM's CEO. As requested by IPM, Biosyn has committed to making the CV-N microbicide available to developing nations.
Biosyn's lead product candidate, 1.0% C31G vaginal gel, is in development for contraception and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV, chlamydia and herpes. The United States has the highest rates of STDs in the industrialized world, and of the 40 million women in the United States who are currently using contraception, more than three-quarters are using a method that places them at risk of contracting an STD. 1.0% C31G vaginal gel is entering Phase III clinical trials for contraception and the prevention of transmission of STDs.
Other products in clinical development at Biosyn include UC-781, a non- nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor in Phase I trials for the prevention of HIV transmission, and 0.5% C31G oral rinse, entering Phase II trials for management of oral infections associated with immune-suppression.
About The International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM)
The mission of the IPM, which was launched in the spring of 2002 with a pledge of US$15 million from the Rockefeller Foundation, is to accelerate the development and availability of safe and effective microbicides. Since its inception, IPM has attracted significant other donor support, including contributions from five European governments as well as $60 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and contributions from the World Bank and UNFPA.
