The Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Welcomes New Program To Help People with HIV and their Healthcare Providers

PRNewswire - June 3, 2003

AKRON, Ohio, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) supports the launch of Dialogues: Education and Treatment for a Well Planned Future(TM) -- an important initiative to help increase communications between HIV-infected people and their care providers. With approximately 40,000 new diagnoses in the US each year, it is important for people with HIV to be educated about the disease, to be aware of the importance of prevention measures, and to be empowered as active participants in their care.

"It can be overwhelming to learn that you have HIV, but the good news is that we now have highly effective treatment and people are living longer, healthier lives with the infection. Patients, working with healthcare providers, now have opportunities to make informed treatment decisions that best fit into their own needs, lifestyles, and plans for the future," said Lucy Bradley-Springer, President, ANAC. "Living with HIV requires coordination of a lot of details and this happens most effectively when clinicians and patients work together to solve problems."

Dialogues offers a patient guide with easy-to-understand information on a broad spectrum of key HIV topics, a glossary of medical terms, tips for managing side effects, and personal planning tools to track appointments and prescriptions. Education for providers is also planned. Materials are provided free by calling 800-576-6600 or logging on to http://www.HIV-Dialogues.com.

ANAC is a nonprofit professional nursing organization committed to enhancing HIV-related knowledge and skills in nurses who are contributing to the HIV epidemic through prevention efforts, clinical care, research, education, and advocacy. ANAC is also dedicated to promoting the health, welfare, and rights of all HIV-infected persons. The Dialogues program, sponsored by Agouron Pharmaceuticals, a Pfizer Company, fosters both of these aims through education efforts that will reach clinicians as well as HIV-infected patients.
