This is the fourth patent issued by the USPTO to Pharmacor within a year. Of those, three cover anti-protease families of compounds and one covers an anti-integrase family of compounds. Additional HIV inhibitor patents are pending.
"Our technology platform is based on the use of simple, original molecular scaffolds on which chemical groups are attached in a few easy steps to generate powerful protease inhibitors," notes Dr. Jocelyn Yelle, V.P. of R&D. "Our urea derivative compounds are the result of this approach."
"A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in August reports a dramatic increase in the incidence of patients on drug therapy that are experiencing drug or multi-drug resistance," states Dr. Brigitte Lebreton, President and CEO of Pharmacor. "And, up to 20% of newly diagnosed HIV- infected patients are now presenting with drug resistance. We are addressing this unmet medical need by developing drug compounds with unique resistance profiles in order to treat these patients."
There are currently 15 AIDS drugs on the market, but as many as 50% of the patient population has developed drug or multi-drug resistance to one or more of these drugs. Theoretically, all patients will show some form of drug resistance due to the nature of the virus, creating demand for a variety of treatment options.
