Some 100 broadcasters and public service organization representatives from across the U.S. were on hand for the black-tie award ceremony, held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York.
The Community Service Award was presented to WFLD-TV (FOX), Chicago, IL for "The Experiment in Black and White," which used reality TV to evoke open and honest discussions about race in Chicago. The National PSA Emmy went to the Kaiser Family Foundation/MTV for the "Be Safe/FFYR (Fight For Your Right): Protect Yourself" campaign including the segments "Convenient Store", "Football", and "NightClub." Maryland Public Television/U.S. Department of Education captured the Local PSA Emmy for "Thinkport," an educational campaign encouraging the importance of adults' involvement in a child's learning.

There were 13 Community Service Emmy Award finalists, seven National PSA finalists, and five Local PSA finalists. Each finalist was presented with a commemorative plaque.
"The Community Service and Public Service Announcement Emmy Award ceremony is one of our most rewarding events as it highlights the television stations and their employees nationwide who have dedicated their time and effort to community service," said Peter Price, President of NATAS. "The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences salutes the honorees and hopes this event will serve as a catalyst to motivate other television stations to support community service."
Nationwide panels of civic leaders and community service professionals chose the finalists. The eligibility period for submissions was the 2001 calendar year.
