WDI Expands Distribution and Sales in South Africa: Provides Healthcare Screening for Private Sector Companies

PRNewswire - December 11, 2001

MIAMI LAKES, Fla., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- World Diagnostics, Inc. (WDI), http://www.worlddiagnostics.com, a global provider of medical diagnostic tests and specialized laboratory products for the international marketplace, announced today that its local distributor in Durbin has concluded agreements with AFROX, NAMPAK and Nestle South Africa. These companies are leaders among South Africa's private sector, and will establish an important precedent for further product sales in the mining and agricultural sectors, as well as in other countries in the region.

Last year, WDI was awarded the tender to supply the Government of South Africa with rapid diagnostic tests to be used in the early detection and curtailment of the spread of HIV/AIDS. The government program has been underway for approximately a year, and the tender was awarded only to WDI and Abbott Diagnostics to work in concert for screening and confirmatory purposes. Since then WDI has increased its product sales to include other infectious disease tests, including drugs of abuse tests. The government program is entirely voluntary. Education and advertising campaigns are utilized to increase the volume of volunteers.

Barry Peters, chairman of WDI, stated, "Private sector testing represents an immediate and important market sector to WDI, since employers maintain the right to screen employees who must comply with healthcare programs aimed at disease identification and containment. WDI's penetration into South Africa's private sector establishes links with such multi-national companies as Nestle, which can be used to expand into other countries where other multi-nationals have concerns relating to employee healthcare.

"Initial product shipments to support private sector testing in South Africa for the quarter ending March 31, 2002 could reach approximately $250,000 in value," Peters concluded.

WDI considers Africa to be its single largest area of demand for its rapid HIV product. Currently, cases of hospital-treated infection are estimated at 18% to 20% of the population, and estimates of the untreated portion of the work force constitute another 20% to 25%.
