amfAR Founding Chairman Dr. Mathilde Krim to Receive The Africa-America Institute's Individual Vision and Achievement Award

PRNewswire - November 7, 2001

NEW YORK, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- On Tuesday, November 13, Dr. Mathilde Krim, Founding Chairman and Chairman of the Board of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), will receive the Africa-America Institute's Award for Individual Vision and Achievement in New York City. Dr. Krim, who is a Life Trustee of the Africa-America Institute (AAI), is being presented the award in honor of her dedicated work at amfAR and her advocacy on behalf of millions of people with HIV/AIDS throughout the world for over two decades.

"I am honored to receive the Africa-America Institute's Award for Individual Vision and Achievement," said Dr. Krim. "I have long had a great interest in African development, its wonderful people, and the extraordinary beauty of its natural world. The HIV/AIDS tragedy has struck and now this cruel epidemic is the leading cause of death among sub-Saharan Africans of all ages. This award recognizes my work in the context of this terrible reality, and also the work of the many outstanding scientists, health care providers and advocates who are on the front lines of the battle against AIDS."

amfAR has long supported research and prevention programs to stem the AIDS crisis in Africa, including grants and technical assistance to help slow the spread of HIV in Tanzania and Kenya. Dr. Peter Piot, now Executive Director of UNAIDS, received an early amfAR grant for his research in Kenya on the heterosexual transmission of HIV. amfAR has also supported pioneering research on AZT's efficacy in significantly lowering mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

"Dr. Krim's trailblazing global work in the fight against AIDS has served to counter the personal ignorance and social stigma associated with the disease, and has raised the importance of health and sex education to an especially meaningful level," said AAI President Mora McLean. "This award acknowledges Dr. Krim's decades of service as a visionary voice of reason, encouraging the world, including Africa, to confront AIDS as a disease, rather than a punishment, and urging others to treat it forthrightly, effectively, and immediately."

amfAR is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of AIDS research, prevention, treatment education, and the advocacy of sound AIDS-related public policy. Since 1985, amfAR has invested nearly $190 million in support for its programs and awarded grants to over 1,900 research teams worldwide.
