On World AIDS Day, Friday, December 1st, Harlem and Soweto communities will unite for an historic, live simulcast worship service. The Harlem community will gather at St. Marks United Methodist Church (137th Street/Edgecombe Ave.), N.Y. at 9:30 a.m.(EST) to join in worship with St. Matthew's Anglican Church in Soweto, South Africa. From Harlem to Soweto: Black Church Speaks out on AIDS! is a worship program designed to raise international awareness of the role churches must play in addressing HIV/AIDS. TV Africa will broadcast the service live to 30 African countries.
Rev. Dr. John W. Kinney of Virginia Union University School of Theology in Richmond, VA will be the featured speaker. Rev. Steve Moreo, pastor of St. Matthew's Anglican Church along with St. Matthew's youth choir will be among those on the program via satellite from Soweto. Harlem pastors participating in the program include: Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker of Canaan Baptist Church; Rev. Melvin Wilson of St. Luke A.M.E. Church; Rev.
