LOS ANGELES, July 19, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the nation's largest HIV/AIDS medical care provider is pleased to announce a new venture in the fight against AIDS. AHF will establish a state-of-the-art AIDS healthcare center serving Oakland and Alameda County. The center, set to open this Thursday, July 20th with a grand opening reception and dedication (from 11am to 1pm) will be known as the Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jr. Clinic at AHF's Healthcare Center/Oakland.

In Alameda County, African Americans make up 17% of the population, yet total 41% of the number of reported AIDS cases. As a result of these statistics, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, in November 1998, took the unprecedented step of declaring a local state of emergency to address the alarming rate of HIV infection among African American and other minority populations in the County.

"I'm heartened that AIDS Healthcare Foundation is joining forces with our community to continue -- and likely strengthen -- much-needed care and services here," said Dr. Robert Scott, a long-time and highly respected Oakland AIDS care physician who will collaborate with AHF in certain aspects of the clinic and via specialty referrals. "Patients in Oakland need improved access to such life-saving care. It is my hope that this community partnership provides just that."
