"We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ty Warner for his extraordinary generosity and commitment to children," said Paul Glaser, chairman of the board of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. "As we enter a new century, Ty's gift will bring immeasurable hope to the many children and families around the world dealing with the ravages of HIV and AIDS. Miracles can happen."
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is the leading worldwide non-profit organization dedicated to identifying, funding and conducting pediatric HIV/AIDS research. Around the world, 1,800 children are infected with HIV every day. The Foundation's goals are to prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child, to improve the lives of children with HIV/AIDS and other serious and life-threatening diseases and to ensure that children are at the forefront of every scientific breakthrough.
"The holidays are a time when families around the world unite and reflect upon our many blessings -- none more special than our children," said Kate S. Carr, chief executive officer of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. "Ty's partnership will help raise global awareness about the impact of the AIDS pandemic, while allowing children around the world to experience the joy of giving. Ty Inc. also has raised the bar for others in the private sector, companies can help teach our children that corporations can do well and do good in the world."
Eleven years ago, Elizabeth Glaser with co-founders Susie Zeegen and Susan DeLaurentis started a foundation to raise money and to fund scientific research for pediatric AIDS. At that time, there was no coordinated research effort around the disease's affect on children and little if any pharmaceutical testing of protocols for pediatric AIDS.
Today, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation has raised more than $85 million to fund critical pediatric research and has created a model of collaboration among scientists that has helped bring rapid progress in the fight against pediatric AIDS.
