WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- In a press conference set for 9:30 am tomorrow December 1st -- World AIDS Day -- AIDS Healthcare Foundation will announce the relaunch of its controversial City of West Hollywood "Safer Sex City" Ballot Measure Initiative that would require certain bars and restaurants in West Hollywood to make free condoms available to patrons. The move comes after repeated and lengthy delays by City Council to a compromise motion on AHF's earlier ballot initiative requiring condoms in bars. AHF stopped gathering signatures on that measure in May -- more than six months ago -- after the Council and city staff agreed to work on a compromise motion to put more condoms on the streets. Although some significant progress has been made, City Council again last night put off discussion of the item until its December 20th meeting.

West Hollywood -- an epicenter of gay, male culture on the West Coast -- is also an epicenter of HIV/AIDS cases and infections. Recent CDC studies document that there has been an alarming increasing in unsafe sex practices among young, gay men -- a high risk population for HIV/AIDS. AHF's initiative -- which would be voted upon by city residents via a West Hollywood City Election (following the collection of the 3,000 plus signatures needed to place the 'Safer Sex City' initiative on the ballot) -- would put some added strength into the city's HIV/AIDS prevention efforts.
