Several of your favorite highest rated networks will telecast HIV/AIDS- related programming including Bravo, Cinemax, Comedy Central, Disney Channel, Food Network, HBO, The Health Network, Home & Garden Television, Lifetime Television, MTV, Recovery Network, Showtime Networks, STARZ! and Sundance Channel. (Consult your local cable guide for dates and times of AIDS-related programming that will be telecast in your area.)
According to Molly McAuliffe, Executive Director of Cable Positive, the cable industry's AIDS-action organization, over 70-million cable customers will be reached through award-winning Cable Positive PSAs that feature Actor Billy Bob Thornton and Poet Maya Angelou, among others. In fact, at 8PM (ET) and 5PM (PT) on December 1st, hundreds of cable networks and systems throughout the United States will simultaneously air an AIDS-related PSA in support of the day.
The theme for this year's World AIDS Day is "AIDS-End the Silence. Listen. Learn. Live!" Utilizing its access and influence, the cable industry is in a position to encourage public involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS. "The cable industry -- through your local cable system and major networks -- is a leader in making this happen. Since its inception, cable television has provided viewers with programming that challenges, informs and educates," said McAuliffe. "The challenge is to reach people with an AIDS-related message that can be life-saving."
In addition, Steve Kmetko, the popular host of "E! News Daily" on E! Entertainment Television, will serve as spokesperson for Cable Positive for the third year in a row. "It's no secret that HIV is still a growing worldwide epidemic. Every day, over 16,000 people become infected; that's a new HIV infection every six seconds. With over 30 million people living with HIV, we must continue to raise public awareness and prevent new infections," Kmetko said.
Cable Positive coordinates the cable industry's participation in both World AIDS Day (December 1) and National HIV Testing Day (June 27), and produces and distributes AIDS-related PSAs to cable networks and systems. In addition, Cable Positive has been instrumental in providing programs and services that directly support the cable industry including the Assistance Fund and AIDS in the Workplace Seminars.
Founded in 1992, Cable Positive is a non-profit organization dedicated to unifying the talents, resources, access and influence of the communications industry to raise AIDS awareness; to fund AIDS education, research and care; and to promote a more compassionate climate for people whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS.
