Med-Design Chief Operating Officer, Michael W. Simpson commented, "This alert from the CDC further confirms the serious nature of this crisis in our health care facilities and should bring an even more rapid conversion to safety needles." Simpson added, "The industry is highly influenced by these safety alerts. In fact, after the 1992 safety alert issued by the FDA regarding the danger of the spread of deadly disease with the use of conventional I.V. Administration Sets, the market was nearly totally converted to safety within 24 months."
The CDC safety alert will now be communicated to hospitals, nursing organizations and physician groups this week. The alert cautions that as many as 800,000 health care workers, including nurses, physicians, laboratory staff and other health care workers are victims of potentially deadly accidental needle sticks each year, with more than 1,000 becoming infected with HIV or liver-destroying hepatitis.
"Too many people see needle stick injuries as a routine part of doing business," said Dr. Linda Rosenstock of the CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. "We want to change that view -- it shouldn't be the case."
In addition to this alert by the CDC and the recent mandate from OSHA, 25 states, representing approximately 70% of the health care market, have either passed, are considering or are drafting legislation to mandate the use of safety needles in health care facilities within those states. On the federal level, legislation mandating the use of safety needles in all health care facilities is also being considered in both houses of Congress.
In a nationally televised newscast yesterday, ABC World News Tonight reported that the Centers for Disease Control said that if needles must be used, the CDC recommends needles with safety features such as retractable points.
Med-Design is a leader in the design and development of such retractable safety needle technology, and has developed a full range of safety needle applications to greatly enhance healthcare worker and patient protection. As one of a very limited number of firms focused exclusively on the design and development of safety needles, MDC currently has a portfolio of more than 21 safety needle products covering applications within the important risk areas of blood collection, infusion therapy, insertion and injection. Many industry professionals have recognized these products as being extremely user friendly and cost effective, both important criteria for meeting stringent user requirements while minimizing manufacturing costs.
