NAACP Launches National Awareness Campaign to Address HIV/AIDS Epidemic Among African-Americans; Films Supported by DuPont Pharmaceuticals and AT&T Broadband & Internet Services

WHAT:

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will unveil an educational film series aimed at addressing the growing epidemic of HIV/AIDS in the African- American community. Developed in partnership with DuPont Pharmaceuticals and AT&T Broadband & Internet Services (AT&T BIS), the programs will be aired in communities across the country, and feature Maya Angelou, David Satcher, Maxine Waters, Julian Bond and Kweisi Mfume, alongside candid and poignant revelations from African-Americans affected by the epidemic. Cable Positive will support the project by duplicating and distributing the films to cable industry participants.

WHY:

-- AIDS is the leading killer of African-American men ages 25-44 and the second leading killer of African-American women

-- African-Americans account for 45 percent of all new HIV cases, although they only make up 13 percent of the U.S. population

-- African-American youth between the ages of 13 and 24 are estimated to account for 56 percent of new HIV cases
