The course text was written by Dr. Ross McKinney, Jr. of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Division, Duke Medical Center.
The course can be found at www.newcourse.com/mother-to-infant/. Medical practitioners who wish to receive continuing medical education (CME) credits can register for the course online at a fee of $25.
This is the first online course developed jointly by New Course Education, Inc., formerly Avanta Media Corporation, and the Duke Office of CME.
Jonathan M. Estes, president and chief executive officer of New Course Education, Inc., said, "Online CME modules offer numerous advantages over traditional methods of continuing medical education. They are low-cost, easily accessible to a global audience, and available 24 hours a day. They can be regularly updated with new information."
Estes added that the New Course CME module is unusual in that it gives medical practitioners the opportunity to communicate with each other. Users can contribute anecdotal information and express their opinions in a designated area on the module.
"Also, as a public service, an audit version of the course is free online to anyone who wants the information without earning credit," Estes said. Dr. Joseph Green, associate dean of the Duke University Medical School Department of CME, said, "I am very excited about the opportunities for online continuing medical education, especially since physicians need more efficient ways to keep up-to-date with new developments in their field."
Globally, mother-to-infant transmission is one of the most common means of spreading HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS. The course text explains that new drug combinations administered during pregnancy show promise in reducing the rate of HIV transmission to infants.
New Course Education, Inc. also develops online courses for corporate clients focusing on workplace wellness and staff development.
