"We are thrilled that Mary has stepped forward to accept this role with the Foundation , " said Susie Zeegen, Co-founder of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. "Her relationship with Elizabeth and her ardent support of the work of the Foundation makes her a knowledgeable, natural spokesperson who will be a strong voice for children living with HIV/AIDS."
Known for her Academy Award-winning role in "Melvin and Howard" and her strong performances in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "Philadelphia," Mary Steenburgen is also known as an advocate for social change. In 1995, Mary received the Desert AIDS Project Award and in 1996, she and her husband, Ted Danson, were recipients of the prestigious Liberty Hall Foundation, Upton Sinclair Award. Currently, Mary serves on the President's Commission for the Selection of White House Fellows.
"I believe the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is one of the most effective organizations in the journey towards a cure for AIDS," said Mary Steenburgen. "Begun by three of my friends, Susie Zeegen, Susan DeLaurentis and the late Elizabeth Glaser, I am serving as a spokesperson for the organization because it is my honor to do so and because Elizabeth Glaser continues to be my inspiration."
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS foundation is the leading national non-profit organization dedicated to identifying, funding and conducting pediatric HIV/AIDS research. The Foundation's goals include reducing HIV transmission from an HIV-infected mother to her newborn, prolonging and improving the lives of children living with HIV, eliminating HIV in infected children and promoting awareness and compassion about HIV/AIDS.
