-- There are 30.6 million people living with HIV/AIDS today. By the year 2000, a total of 40 million people will be living with HIV.
-- 1 in 100 adults in the 15-49 age group is infected with HIV.
* 1.1 million children under the age of 15 are living with HIV/AIDS today. Since the beginning of the epidemic, 3.8 million children are estimated to have become infected with HIV and 2.7 million to have died.
* Only 1 infected person in 10 is aware of HIV status, approximately 27 million people.
* Altogether, 5.8 million people are believed to have acquired HIV infection in 1997 and over 90% live in the developing world.
* Approximately 16,000 people become infected with the AIDS virus every day of the year -- far beyond the previous estimate of 8,500 new infections a day.
* An estimated 2.3 million people died of AIDS in 1997. These deaths represent a fifth of the total 11.7 million AIDS deaths since the beginning of the epidemic in the late 1970s.
* In sub-Saharan Africa, 7.6% of all those aged 15-49 are infected with HIV.
* Overall, about 6.4 million people are currently believed to be living with HIV in Asia and the Pacific -- just over 1 in 5 of the world's total.
* In Latin America, 1.3 million adults and children are living with HIV/AIDS.
* In the United States, newly-published figures indicate that the first-ever annual decrease in new AIDS cases -- 6% -- occurred in 1996, and an even bigger decrease is expected in 1997.
* These newly-released figures reveal that there are about one-third more people living with HIV than was estimated in December of 1996. The underestimation of transmission rates, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, has contributed to the difference in these figures.
