The condom's "baggy" shape, with extra room at the tip, is less restricting, provides more friction and enhances sensitivity for both partners.
"One of the ways to prevent the spread of AIDS is by using condoms. Yet, many people say that condoms are too restricting," said Carol Carrozza, Director of Marketing for Ansell, maker of LifeStyles condoms. "Sex is fun and the new Xtra Pleasure condom offers consumers something entirely new which is pleasurable and good for you. We thought World AIDS Day was an appropriate time to introduce the product."
In addition to introducing its new product, Ansell is pegging a number of activities to World AIDS Day to increase consumer awareness to safer sex and condom use.
"Even though the incidence of AIDS appears to be declining, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, are on the rise," said Ms. Carrozza. "In fact, in the United States, five of the top ten most frequently reported diseases are sexually transmitted diseases; and, twenty-five percent of those reporting such diseases, are teenagers."
For World AIDS Day, the company has doubled its advertising schedule on MTV in selected markets including Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Baltimore and Boston. The ads feature winners from the LifeStyles Video Contest.
Ansell also has initiated an aggressive speaking program to college students on the subject of condoms and responsible sexual behavior.
"The response from college students has been phenomenal," said Carrozza. "They are eager to ask questions and get honest answers. We don't advocate any particular behavior but rather try to educate listeners about making responsible behavior choices."
LifeStyles also is expanding its reach into a new target market by advertising on BET (Black Entertainment Television).
"Television is the most pervasive medium available to inform consumers about safe and responsible condom use," said Carrozza. "Ansell broke ground by advertising condoms on MTV, network affiliates around the country and now on BET. We believe the message is important and we will work to increase awareness whenever and however possible."
Ansell also is working with The Department of Commerce, Rutgers University and local radio stations to support their programs for World AIDS Day.
