Center for Disease Control (CDC) statistics have long demonstrated a disturbing gap in AIDS deaths among Latino, African American and white patients infected with HIV. Today, with so much hope offered by combined drug therapies, AIDS continues to have a devastating -- and increasing -- impact on communities of color. Issues to be explored during the "Los Angeles AIDS Summit: People of Color and HIV" include:
* Are HIV infections dropping in communities of color?
* Are people of color able to access new treatments?
* How do we ensure that people of color are accessing medical treatments?
* What are the communities' HIV prevention needs?
The Summit will also include a panel of community leaders who will hear testimony from people living with HIV/AIDS, medical experts and other community providers knowledgeable about the issues.
* Principal objectives of the Los Angeles AIDS Summit include:
* Fostering dialogue between decision-makers, providers and patients
* Assessing the level of access people of color in Los Angeles County have to new life-saving HIV treatments
* Producing a white paper (report) summarizing the Summit's findings and recommendations for federal, state and local decision-makers to help ensure access to life-saving treatments
* Attracting attention to the ongoing challenge of access to these costly drug therapies
"Los Angeles AIDS Summit: People of Color and HIV" takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Wednesday December 3rd at the L. A. City Board of Education, 450 N. Grand Ave, Room H-160, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
