'HIV/AIDS: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow' Topic of MetroHealth Conference

PR Newswire, 810 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019 - Wednesday October 8 8:02 AM EDT

CLEVELAND, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Nineteen-Ninety-Seven has been a watershed year in the relatively short history of HIV/AIDS in this country. For the first time, protease inhibitors have prolonged the lives of many for whom death seemed imminent. The introduction of new testing options has influenced the lives of many for whom testing seemed unapproachable. Yet, clearly, the crisis is not over. While men continue to become HIV-infected, alarming numbers of women and adolescents are contracting the disease.

These issues -- and many more -- will be explored during the October 15-16 conference, HIV/AIDS: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, at the Cleveland Convention Center. Sponsored by The MetroHealth System, and supported by the Cleveland Department of Public Health and the Cleveland Foundation, the conference will examine through various plenary and breakout sessions:

* The changing face of AIDS: Women, minorities and adolescents

* Current therapies and guidelines on management of HIV disease

* The critical need for continued prevention programs

* Issues pertaining to counseling and testing

Registration and additional information can be obtained by calling 216-420-8646.
