Acyclovir is the generic equivalent of the branded product Zovirax(R) produced by Glaxo Wellcome (whose patent expired a few days ago) and is indicated for the treatment of genital herpes, herpes zoster (shingles) and chickenpox (varicella). The latest addition to Alpharma's anti-viral category in its broad line of liquid pharmaceutical products, Acyclovir Oral Suspension will be marketed exclusively by USPD and packaged in 16 ounce HDPE bottles. As the sole supplier of Acyclovir Oral Suspension, USPD will begin shipments of the new product today to its customer base including wholesalers, distributors, chains, mass merchandisers and other pharmaceutical customers.
In announcing its second ANDA approval this month for USPD, Chairman & CEO Einar W. Sissener stated, "We are certainly very pleased to announce another new product introduction for USPD. Although certain tablet and capsule companies have announced the launch of generic acyclovir equivalents, Alpharma's U.S. Pharmaceuticals Division presently has the only liquid application in this market, giving us considerable competitive advantages.
