Alpharma Announces FDA Approval for Acyclovir Oral Suspension; First Generic Equivalent and Only Liquid Product

PR Newswire, 810 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019 - 29 Apri 1997.

FORT LEE, N.J., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Alpharma Inc. (NYSE: ALO) today announced that its U.S. Pharmaceuticals Division (USPD) received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to manufacture and market Acyclovir Oral Suspension.

Acyclovir is the generic equivalent of the branded product Zovirax(R) produced by Glaxo Wellcome (whose patent expired a few days ago) and is indicated for the treatment of genital herpes, herpes zoster (shingles) and chickenpox (varicella). The latest addition to Alpharma's anti-viral category in its broad line of liquid pharmaceutical products, Acyclovir Oral Suspension will be marketed exclusively by USPD and packaged in 16 ounce HDPE bottles. As the sole supplier of Acyclovir Oral Suspension, USPD will begin shipments of the new product today to its customer base including wholesalers, distributors, chains, mass merchandisers and other pharmaceutical customers.

In announcing its second ANDA approval this month for USPD, Chairman & CEO Einar W. Sissener stated, "We are certainly very pleased to announce another new product introduction for USPD. Although certain tablet and capsule companies have announced the launch of generic acyclovir equivalents, Alpharma's U.S. Pharmaceuticals Division presently has the only liquid application in this market, giving us considerable competitive advantages.

Under the leadership of President Thomas L. Anderson and his reorganized management team, our U.S. Pharmaceuticals Division is aggressively pursuing every opportunity to capture market share and drive profitability to the bottom line with the introduction of new high-margin, specialty generic products."

Alpharma Inc. is a multinational pharmaceutical company which develops, manufactures and markets specialty generic and proprietary human pharmaceuticals and animal health products. Alpharma is the largest manufacturer of generic liquid and topical pharmaceuticals in the U.S., has an established and growing market position in finished pharmaceuticals in Europe and the Far Fast, and is among the world's leading producers of important specialty antibiotics. In its animal health businesses, Alpharma is internationally recognized as a leading provider of animal health feed additives for poultry and livestock, and vaccines for farmed fish.
