Clinical Trials Begin For Immucor's Second Automated Blood Analyzer -- The ABS(HV)

PR Newswire, 810 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019 - Monday, 30 September 1996

NORCROSS, Ga., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Immucor, Inc. (Nasdaq: BLUD), maker of blood bank reagent systems and related products, announced today clinical trials for the Company's second automated blood analyzer, the ABS(HV), have begun. Like Immucor's leading instrument, the ABS2000, which was submitted previously to FDA and is awaiting U.S. market clearance, the ABS(HV) is designed to perform certain blood compatibility tests currently done manually by blood bank laboratory technologists. Both the ABS2000 and the ABS(HV) were developed by Immucor under exclusive agreements with medical instrument manufacturers, and both utilize the Company's patented and proprietary Capture(R) reagent technology.

Commenting on the clinical trial process, Edward L. Gallup, President of Immucor, Inc. said, "The clinical trials are expected to take approximately six to eight weeks to complete, and if successful, the Company will submit a 510(k) application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for market clearance, and begin non-U.S. marketing this winter."

Commenting further, Mr. Gallup noted, "While the ABS2000 is ideal for patient testing in the hospital transfusion service, we recognized a growing market need for a second analyzer in high volume blood donor centers and clinical reference laboratories. Applying the same work flow solutions developed for the hospital laboratory with the ABS2000 -- automating current manual procedures to minimize technologist hands-on time, and positive sample identification to reduce the potential for technologist transcription errors -- we targeted a second development effort called the ABS(HV). If the project proves successful, the ABS(HV) will offer blood donor centers, clinical laboratories and high volume transfusion services automated batch processing and positive sample identification of routine blood donor tests, specifically blood group antibody screening, syphilis screening and cytomegalovirus (CMV) screening."

Founded in 1982, Immucor manufactures and sells a complete line of reagents and systems used primarily by hospitals and blood banks in a number of tests performed to detect and identify certain properties of the cell and serum components of human blood prior to blood transfusion. Capitalizing on its patented and proprietary Capture(R) product technology, the Company has also developed two transfusion service laboratory analyzers to automate certain labor intensive, time consuming blood tests currently performed manually by laboratory technologists.
