National Beverage Expands Second Annual Holiday Charities Promotion

PR Newswire - December 11, 1995

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Determined to surpass contributions from last year's special holiday soft drink sales promotion which benefited two national charities, National Beverage Corp. (Nasdaq: POPS) chairman, Nick A. Caporella, announced today the launching of this year's program for those charities by expanding distribution in additional retail outlets and lengthening the time span for holiday beverage sales.

Last year, National Beverage Corp. -- through its special holiday sales program involving retail chain stores in several selected markets -- made a contribution which was equally divided between St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, and The City of Hope National Medical Center/Beckman Research Institute in Duarte, CA.

While last year National Beverage donated proceeds from sales for a five-day period, this year a portion of the proceeds will be donated throughout a 42-day program which began on November 20.

The St. Nick's holiday beverages, packaged in specially designed 2- and 3-liter bottles, include Cranberry, Ginger Ale, Cola and Diet Cola.

"In today's competitive business atmosphere...where the search for growth and margins are first and foremost...all of us at National Beverage are extremely proud that, through our efforts, some children who suffer from this dread disease cancer will be helped," Caporella said.

To stimulate the soft drink holiday gift effort, National Beverage is running a full-page color advertisement in today's edition of USA Today. Promotional displays have also been set up in select retail chain stores in target markets.

"National Beverage Corp.'s efforts show the children who come to St. Jude Hospital from all corners of the world just how special they are," said Richard C. Shadyac, national executive director of ALSAC, the fundraising arm of St. Jude. "Corporate support is vital to our desperately ill little boys and girls and gives hope to the children and their parents alike. National Beverage's generosity means more than words can say," he added.

St. Jude Children's Hospital was founded in 1962 by the late entertainer Danny Thomas to improve childhood cancer survival rates around the world.

At City of Hope, Dr. Sanford M. Shapero, president and chief executive officer, shared Shadyac's appreciation to National Beverage and said, "This generous contribution will allow us to further enhance our work in combating leukemia and other forms of cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Since we began, City of Hope's very foundation has been built on those who choose to support this unique philanthropy. This gift will help ensure a happy holiday season for those in need of our specialized services."

The City of Hope Medical Center is world-renowned for its research and treatment to combat leukemia and other forms of cancer, diabetes, AIDS and Tourette Syndrome.

National Beverage serves as a holding company for various operating subsidiaries and 13 strategically located manufacturing facilities that manufacture, market and distribute its full line of cola and multi- flavored branded soft drinks and bottled water: Shasta(R), Faygo(R), Body Works(R), a Sante(R), Spree(R), Big Shot(R), nuAnce(R), Creepy Coolers(TM), St. Nick's(TM) and Kid Cans(TM).
