Hollywood has helped focus attention on the virus, working AIDS into various projects. In the past year, two AIDS-themed films, Boys on the Side and The Cure, were released without the tag "message movie" attached to the their ad campaigns. On ABC's General Hospital, two teenage characters tested positive for HIV. One of them died on the show yesterday.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 32,914 people died from the virus from July '94 through June '95, bringing the total to more than 300,000 deaths in the U.S. alone. Among those in the entertainment industry who succumbed to the virus this year are rapper Eazy-E (Eric Wright) and Elizabeth Glaser, a founder of the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
The December 2 issue of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, with Toy Story on the cover, hits newsstands this weekend.
