Computer Shopper, the over 800-page publication for buying computer products direct, held its 10th annual Best Buy ceremony at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas during COMDEX the week before Thanksgiving. And this year, there was much to be thankful for. While the event honored reader- chosen PC product manufacturers and resellers offering the best products at the best values, it also raised over $215,000 for the Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Tomorrows Children's Fund.
Funds were raised through sizable donations from Computer Shopper advertisers as well as through a silent auction featuring some 70 items including donated PC products and celebrity-signed memorabilia--such as footballs signed by Emmit Smith and Troy Aikman, a Monica Seles autographed tennis shirt, a leather motorcycle jacket signed by Donna Karan, CDs signed by Keith Richards, Donna Summer, Clint Black and Michael Feinstein, and a 1992 Barcelona Olympics "Dream Team" basketball autographed by team member Karl Malone.
"It sounds trite to say at an awards show that there are no losers," said Computer Shopper publisher, Al DiGuido. "But this year, I feel that it is more true than ever. I am humbled by the response to our efforts to raise money for these two very needed organizations. The generosity of so many companies in our industry to this call for help from Computer Shopper has been inspiring. Together, our work this year on behalf of these organizations was a true act of caring and love--one that could only be measured by the tears of joy in the eyes of the people we have helped."
After bidding at the silent auction table was complete and award winners were recognized, party-goers danced to the sounds of Donna Summer, who moved the crowds to their feet with her disco classics such as "On the Radio" and "Last Dance" as well as show-stoppers like "Evita".
Event "Champions"
Many companies made sizable donations to the Computer Shopper dual charity effort. A donation of $20,000 was made by Computer Discount Warehouse. A donation of $10,000 was made from each of the following: ComputAbility, Comtrade, Conner, Cybermax, Dell, EPS Technologies, Insight, Mag Innovision, Mega Haus, Micro Xperts, Midwest Micro, PC Importers, PCs Compleat, Quantex, USA Flex, ViewSonic and Western Digital. Other companies such as Epson, Texas Instruments, Acer and Mag Innovision also donated items for the silent auction.
