Aronex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Announces European Patent Covering Nystatin (LF)

PR Newswire - November 28, 1995

THE WOODLANDS, Texas, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Aronex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARNX) today announced that the European Patent Office has issued a key patent covering technology for producing Nystatin(LF), the Company's liposomal product in clinical development for the treatment of serious fungal infections. The patent covers the manufacturing process involved in formulating liposomal nystatin.

"The ability to produce nystatin in a liposomal formulation suitable for parenteral administration is critical to the development of Nystatin(LF) for systemic fungal infections. The liposomal formulation reduces the drug's toxicity while retaining its anti-fungal activity," said James M. Chubb, Ph.D., President of Aronex. "In addition to the patent in Europe, this technology is covered by an issued U.S. patent and is pending in Japan."

The patent (number 0567582b1), specifically covers the simple method of preparing a lyophilized preliposomal powder, which can be used to quickly and conveniently generate a liposomal formulation of nystatin upon reconstitution with saline. The patent is licensed to Aronex under a worldwide exclusive agreement from the University of Texas' M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Nystatin(LF) is currently in Phase II/III trials for the treatment of systemic fungal infections, a major problem for patients with impaired immune defense mechanisms, resulting from such diseases as HIV or cancer.

Aronex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is developing and commercializing innovative pharmaceuticals for treating cancer and infectious diseases. Aronex has several products in clinical development including Nystatin(LF) for the treatment of systemic fungal infections; Annamycin(LF) for the treatment of solid tumors; and AR177 for HIV infection. The Company has a collaboration with Genzyme Corporation to develop Tretinoin(LF) for the treatment of Kaposi's sarcoma and acute promyelocytic leukemia.
