A telephone press briefing to launch an important education campaign on Chlamydia -- the most common STD in America -- will immediately follow the satellite symposium.
WHY: Chlamydia is the most common, costly, and persistent of the bacterial sexually transmitted diseases, with an estimated 4 million new cases of Chlamydia occurring each year, costing Americans over $2.2 billion.
Like other STDs, men and women with Chlamydia are at a three-to five-fold increased risk of acquiring HIV.
Up to 40% of untreated chlamydial infections in women lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and 20% of women with PID become infertile.
Chlamydia is known as the "silent epidemic" because 75% of women and 50% of men have no symptoms of disease.
