Thailand Ok's Studies With New AIDS Drug

PR Newswire - November 8, 1995

STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- VIMRx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq Small Cap: VMRX (common stock), VMRXW (warrants)) announced today that it has received approval from the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand to conduct clinical trials with VIMRxyn for the treatment of AIDS. VIMRxyn is a synthetic version of hypericin, a naturally occurring compound with strong antiviral properties. Patient dosing will begin as soon as the Thai FDA issues an import license for VIMRxyn.

Twenty-four HIV-infected patients will receive VIMRxyn in the study which is designed to identify an effective dose with minimal cutaneous photosensitivity. In an earlier trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, photosensitivity was found to be a dose-limiting side effect.

The study's principal investigator is Dr. Sricharoen Migasena, director of the Vaccine Trial Centre at Mahidol University in Bangkok. Pharma Bio-Research (Zuidlaren, Netherlands), a leading clinical research organization in Europe, is managing the study.

According to Alfonso J. Tobia, Ph.D., executive vice president at VIMRx, finding the right dose is the next step in the development of VIMRxyn. "Once we have selected an oral dosage we can begin expanded Phase II and multi-centered Phase III trials in the U.S. and abroad."

VIMRx Pharmaceuticals Inc. is developing therapeutic products to fight the spread of viral and retroviral diseases. The in vitro antiviral properties of hypericin were initially documented at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Further studies and the discovery of the antiviral properties of hypericin were made at NYU Medical Center. VIMRx has exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialize hypericin and its derivatives. VIMRx, through its subsidiary, VPI Holdings Limited, has also acquired exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialize a new class of therapeutics based upon catalytic oligonucleotides.
