Traditional medicine can cure HIV infections -- Doctor

Panafrican News Agency - December 11, 2001

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - Eric Gbodossou, a Senegal-based medical doctor, who also practices herbal medicine, says traditional medicine can cure several opportunistic infections associated with HIV/AIDS.

Gbodossou, President of NGO for the "Promotion of Traditional Medicines" under the French acronym PROMETRA, is based in Fatick, some 150-km from Dakar, the Senegalese capital.

Addressing the press on the sidelines of the ongoing 12th International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (CISMA) in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, he warned that medical reforms in Africa must take into account traditional medicine, which handles some 90 percent of patients on the continent.

Gbodossou addressed the press jointly with the African networks of journalists for the promotion of traditional medicine.

The networks from Burkina Faso, Benin and Senegal, work for the recognition and the promotion of the African natural medicine.

Their leaders say they support healers with proven talents but are against charlatans.
