The award, announced at the ongoing international conference on sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS in Africa (CISMA), was explained as a recognition of Compaore's efforts in the fight against the pandemic in Burkina Faso and Africa at large.
The UN was also honoured with an Excellence Prize awarded secretary general Kofi Annan for his plea towards a 90-percent reduction in the prices of antiretrovirals for African patients.
With prospects of antiretrovirals cutting down HIV/AIDS mortality by 65-70 percent, CISMA officials urged the international community to work at making the medication more accessible to sufferers in developing countries.
