UNICEF Country Office Representative, Nicholas Alipui, observed that part of the HIV/AIDS component would include support for government policies that respect, facilitate and fulfil children's and women's rights in selected communities in chosen districts.
The priority areas the agency will support alongside HIV/AIDS include the education of the girl child, childhood care, immunisation, protection of children from violence, exploitation, abuse and discrimination in all its forms, he said.
The strategy of supporting service delivery within selected communities and building administrative capacities at the district and community level would be used in achieving the set goals, he added.
Alipui made the remarks in Nairobi during a mid-term review meeting between representatives of the Kenya Government and UNICEF Programme of Co-operation officials.
He said during the period under review, it was learned that overall programme resources were too few for high quality implementation in the 19 districts envisaged earlier.
Consequently, he said, the Mid-term review has proposed a scaling back to smaller number of districts where direct service delivery will take place in selected communities.
The meeting was convened to assess the achievements against planned results and reach agreements with key stakeholders on adjustments to strategies and objectives of the programme.
