Mogae becomes the first African head of state to receive the award given annually to people who have shown outstanding visionary leadership and courage in the fight against the pandemic.
Receiving the award from the Harvard Institute director, Richard Marlink, over the weekend, Mogae described the honour as a recognition of Botswana's effort as a small nation in jeopardy but united in its determination to fight the scourge.
He said the award came at a time when Botswana is the most seriously affected country in the world. He said being at the centre of human resistance against the pandemic, Botswana is determined to turn the tide and make it the centre of hope and resurrection.
Botswna's HIV prevalence rate estimated at more than 38 percent is among the world's highest.
Mogae dedicated the award to all those at the centre of the fight against the pandemic, the youth who for undergoing and encouraging voluntary testing, women committed to the prevention of mother to child transmission programme, care givers involved in the home based care programme and all health workers.
Commending Mogae, the chairperson of Harvard international advisory council, Morris Templesman, said few national leaders had mobilised their citizens against the incurable disease as he had done.
Meanwhile, the institute's director encouraged other leaders to emulate Mogae's efforts.
