British Airways collects Ksh 55.5m for HIV/AIDS victims

Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - British Airways, through the United Nations Children's Education Fund (UNICEF), has collected over Ksh 55.5 million (about 0.7 million US dollars) for the care of people living with HIV/Aids in Kenya.

British Airways country commercial manager, Ian Petrie, told journalists in Nairobi Thursday that for the past four years, his company had been collecting donations from every passenger to help people living with the incurable disease.

Petrie said that Kenya faces a hard economic future due to the rate at which the disease is spreading, killing the economically productive.

He noted that if not stopped, the disease constitutes a danger to the entire world. In Kenya, AIDS-related diseases kill about 500 people per day, according to official statistics.

He noted that the BA programme dubbed "change for good" is set to increase its collection due to the growing awareness about the disease. He appealed to other charitable organisations to join hands in the fight against the disease.
