Ghanaian newspaper cautions youths about AIDS

Panafrican News Agency - November 29, 2001

Accra, Ghana (PANA) - A Ghanaian newspaper has appealed to the National AIDS Commission and NGOs to step up their AIDS education campaign by focusing on the youth.

It said they should drive home to the youth, especially students, that being the future of the nation, they must embrace the message and "adhere to every warning sign that it entails".

The Free Press painted a dark picture of the devastating effect of AIDS in Africa. Quoting Ghanaian authorities, it said about 200 persons in the country contract the disease every day.

"This revelation should make Ghanaians sit up, brace themselves to combat the disease by whatever means possible to at least prevent its spread before things get out of hand."

The Free Press asks whether Ghanaians are taking the warning messages seriously. It points out that the youth were making a joke of the exercise.

"This rather naive attitude towards such serious issues like education programmes about HIV/AIDS must be condemned. The nation stands to gain if the young ones will embrace the message and heed every warning signal for their own safety and that of mother Ghana."
