Camair to serve Ouagadougou during AIDS conference

Camair to serve Ouagadougou during AIDS conference

Panafrican News Agency - November 28, 2001

Douala, Cameroon (PANA) - Rapha l Salambere, director of civil aviation in Burkina Faso, has requesting Cameroon Airlines (Camair) to start flights to Ouagadougou before 9 December, when the international conference on AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases is scheduled to open there.

According to a Burkinabe delegation which visited Cameroon "in search of a dynamic airline", Burkina Faso wants Camair to transport a significant part of the 5,000 participants expected for the global forum.

Camair could notably carry participants from Central and East Africa.

The Burkinabe request comes in the wake of difficulties facing Air Afrique and some European airlines, while Air Burkina only flies to neighbouring countries.

The managing director of Camair said that such an agreement would confirm his company's ambition to turn Douala into a hub in sub- regional air transport.

Ongoing development works at Douala airport are aimed at such a venture.

The works include extension of the runways and modernisation of passenger halls. "This will improve airport facilities in the economic capital," the managing director said.

Camair, following positive results on the Dakar and Bamako routes, intends to extend its activities to the West African market, which holds a huge potential.
