NEW YORK; College Says It Has Money for AIDS Lab

The New York Times - Wednesday, December 1, 1999

Allen L. Sessoms, president of Queens College, said yesterday that the college had lined up the $6 million in private contributions that it needed to build an AIDS research center. But he said he could not name the company that is making the donation until the paperwork was in hand, which he expects will be this week.

Dr. Sessoms had pledged to raise much of the $30 million needed for the center from private donors. But aside from a pledge of $4.5 million from Dr. Bernard Salick, a Queens graduate, and his wife, Gloria, the only money that has been promised until now is about $15 million from New York State and New York City.

Several weeks ago, CUNY's chancellor, Matthew Goldstein, said that if Queens had not raised the money by the end of November, CUNY would see if it could use the city and state money on other campuses.

Dr. Sessoms said yesterday that "scientific negotiations were satisfactorily concluded over two weeks ago" between Dr. Luc Montagnier, co-discoverer of the AIDS virus and the director of the center, and the donor, a foreign food company with operations in the United States.
