The New York Times - December 28, 1986
Following are some findings from the mid-decade report.
High Blood Pressure. "Between 1972 and 1984, the death rate from heart disease fell 33.9 percent; since 1980 the rate has fallen 9 percent. Achievements in control of high blood pressure, including a remarkable level of public awareness, have contributed to this positive change."
Infant health and mortality. Although the infant mortality rate fell from 13.8 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1978 to 10.6 deaths in 1984, "an analysis of trends through 1990 provides the unsettling - and challenging - conclusion that many of the objectives will not be achieved, given current rates of progress."
Smoking. "Between 1965 and 1985, smoking prevalence among adult men fell from 52 percent to 33.5 percent. During the same 20-year period, the proportion of adult women who smoked cigarettes declined from 34 to 28.2 percent." Smoking is increasing, however, among women 20 to 24 years of age.
Accidents. The death rate for automobile accidents fell from 23.6 per 100,000 people in 1978 to 19 in 1983, and the 1990 target of no more than 18 deaths per 100,000 will likely be met. The decrease is the result of many factors, including improved automobile design, better emergency care, greater concern about drunken driving, and increased use of seat belts.
