The New York Times - November 16, 1986
Richard Haitch
The company, Coastal Insurance of Santa Monica, said in December that it had sold more than 1,200 policies at around $300 apiece.
The insurance paid some of the medical costs for those who got the disease, acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The policies are no longer sold. "There wasn't sufficient interest," says Christopher Wain, an actuary with Lewis & Ellis Inc. of Encino, Calif., which performs administrative services for Coastal Insurance.
Despite marketing efforts to reach "groups that were exposed, like nurses," only about 1,400 policies were sold, he says. The initial goal had been 5,000.
About 20 claims "are being investigated or have been paid" so far, Mr. Wain says, noting that while the insurer has not lost money yet, "the jury is still out."
