Pitching A Tent For A Gala Benefit

The New York Times - October 4, 1986
Susan Heller Anderson

Glenn Bernbaum pitched a tent next to Mortimer's, his restaurant, and charged his friends and neighbors "20,000 cents" to attend a lavish block party to raise money for the new laboratory for AIDS research at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. Bobby Short, Felix Rohatyn, Henry Kissinger and Gloria Vanderbilt were all at the party Thursday night on Lexington Avenue at 75th Street.

About 700 people came. Police barricades blocked the streets, and neighbors hung over them to gawk at the elegant crowd. Saucisson en croute, smoked salmon and Champagne were served in the tent.

"Everybody from this side of town turned out," said Mario Buatta, the interior designer.

Inside Mortimer's, which was transformed into a cabaret, Mr. Short, Julie Wilson, Steve Ross and Peter Duchin performed, free, of course.

'AIDS Touches Everyone'

"It's my way of showing concern," Mr. Short said, before slipping off to his regular gig at the Carlyle Hotel.

"This couldn't have happened a year ago," Mr. Buatta said, "but now AIDS touches everyone."

All the food, drink and preparations were donated, with Mr. Bernbaum picking up the tab for whatever wasn't. The party raised $170,000, he said.
