The New York Times - December 29, 1985

The three men, all serving sentences for robbery, were brought to St. Clare's Hospital and Health Center. They were to be transferred this week to the hospice, which is in the rectory of St. Veronica's Church.
Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun who won the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, said she had chosen Christmas Eve for the opening of the 14-bed hospice and the release of the prisoners "because Jesus was born, so I wanted also to help them be born in joy and love and peace."
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York had tried to open a shelter for patients suffering from AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, on the Upper West Side last summer, but was forced to cancel its plans when parishioners objected.
Mayor Koch and State Correction Commissioner Thomas A. Coughlin 3d, representing Governor Cuomo, joined Mother Teresa and John Cardinal O'Connor, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, at the opening ceremony and news conference. Said the Cardinal: "We hope that what Mother Teresa and others are doing will help lead the way and show that it can be done."
