Kenya Seizes Papers With Article on AIDS

The New York Times - November 23, 1985

The International Herald Tribune reported yesterday that the Government of Kenya had confiscated the Nov. 9 issue of the Paris-based newspaper, apparently because of displeasure with an article on AIDS in Africa. The article, by Lawrence K. Altman, originally appeared in The New York Times on Nov. 8.

Walter Wells, editor of The Herald Tribune, said censors had seized a shipment of 300 copies after reviewing them at the Nairobi airport.

Yesterday, The Herald Tribune printed a second Times article by Dr. Altman on AIDS in Africa. Mr. Wells said he had not yet learned whether copies of that issue had been cleared by the Kenyan censors.

In his articles Dr. Altman, the medical reporter for The Times, noted that many African governments had been reluctant to acknowledge the existence of AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, within their borders.
