Councilwoman Assails Governments on AIDS

The New York Times - November 15, 1985

The city and state governments have allowed public fear of AIDS to stimulate criticism of the homosexual community, City Councilwoman Ruth W. Messinger charged last night.

Mrs. Messinger, a Manhattan Democrat, spoke to about 500 people at an organizational meeting of the Gay and Lesbian Anti-Defamation League at the Metropolitan-Duane Methodist Church in Greenwich Village.

The organization, which is supported by several homosexual activist groups, will seek to combat "bigoted statements, articles and laws" that "endanger the civil rights" of homosexuals, according to Gregory Kolovakas, who convened last night's meeting.

Mrs. Messinger and other speakers voiced opposition to legislation pending before the City Council that would close bathhouses catering to homosexuals. They contended that the bathhouses did not represent the major threat in spreading acquired immune deficiency syndrome, which they said was contracted in a majority of cases by drug users through intravenous injections.
