Help for AIDS Victims

The New York Times - November 13, 1985
Susan Heller Anderson and David W. Dunlap

"An Early Frost," an NBC-TV drama about AIDS, dealt with painful issues. But there was cheering among nearly 50 men and women who gathered in an Upper West Side apartment to watch the broadcast.

The group had surpassed its goal in raising money for the Gay Men's Health Crisis, a support organization for people with AIDS, acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

"I thought we would maybe reach $400 or $500," said Hugh Graham, in whose apartment the gathering took place. "But these people really dug deep and gave."

It was among about 100 money-raising events taking place around the city Monday night, centered on the broadcast. William Jones, development director for the support group, said yesterday that he did not yet know how much money had been raised.

"Five dollars and $10 can add up quickly," he said. "We actually get few major contributions, so we appreciate the concern of all people, particularly those who can't afford large donations."

The party at Mr. Graham's apartment was organized by members of World Balance, a charitable organization. The $2,060 they took in will go to a financial assistance program that makes grants of $200 to $400 to AIDS patients in extreme financial hardship.
