The New York Times - November 3, 1985
New York hospitals may face the greatest strain because they are treating a relatively high percentage of AIDS victims suffering from drug addiction, said Dr. Jo Ivey Boufford, the president of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.
"We are currently treating a disproportionate share of cases from the drug-abusing community, who usually are sicker and have more complications," Dr. Boufford told the House Energy and Commerce Committee's subcommittee on health and the environment on Friday.
About 26 percent of all New York AIDS victims are drug users, Dr. Boufford said. The other major risk group is made up of homosexual or bisexual men, who represent about 56 percent of the AIDS patients.
Dr. Boufford predicted that cases of AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, would continue to increase dramatically over the next five years. She said the City Health Department had reported a 64 percent increase in AIDS cases in the first six months of this year compared with the same period in 1984.
