NEW YORK DAY BY DAY; Shelter for AIDS Victims

The New York Times - December 15, 1984
Susan Heller Anderson and David W. Dunlap

"He died in the streets," Harvey Fierstein recalled about someone he knew. "He was a respected person in the black community and the gay community.

And he died in the streets, thrown out of his apartment."

The tragedy of AIDS is compounded for many victims when they return from the hospital to find that they are no longer welcome in their own homes or able to pay the rent.

To help, the AIDS Resource Center, a private group, hopes to renovate a Lower East Side brownstone as a shelter for 12 people with the disease, acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Mr. Fierstein, the playwright and actor, will be the host tomorrow at a money-raising benefit at Limelight, at 47 West 20th Street. If all goes well, the residence might open early next year.

The Rev. Lee Hancock of the Judson Memorial Church, a member of the center's board, said of the home: "We want to make it a residential atmosphere. We don't want to warehouse people."

"There is now no place for these people to go," she said. "No place. To realize that people are dealing with the prospect of death without even the benefit of a home - it's just incredible."
