AROUND THE NATION; Promising Drug Tests Asserted by Company

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - A new drug has proved promising in tests to treat recurrent outbreaks of a herpes virus and to help prevent the development of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, a pharmaceutical concern said Friday. It was the first public confirmation by Newport Pharmaceutical International that the test results were encouraging. Initial results had been published in medical journals.

Company officials said the results of tests on the drug, Isoprinosine, would be explained in more detail at a London medical conference Tuesday.
