The New York Times - August 8, 1983
In an unusual move, the editors of The New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association and the journal Science said Friday that they hoped to give the public access to the latest research as quickly as possible.
AIDS is a disease of unknown origin that destroys the body's infection-fighting immune system. The national Centers for Disease Control said Thursday that 1,972 cases have been reported since June 1981; over that period, 38 percent of the victims have died and none is known to have recovered. More than 70 percent of the victims have been homosexual or bisexual men.
Dr. Edward J. Huth, editor of the monthly Annals of Internal Medicine, said his journal had made it a policy to rush publication of work with a direct bearing on public health. ''We did it before with toxic shock syndrome and legionnaire's disease,'' he said.
When articles are submitted to such journals, they are reviewed by editors who either reject them outright or send them to outside experts for review. Then an article may go back to the author for revisions.
Dr. Huth said, for example, that expedited articles could be given to reviewers in Philadelphia, where his journal is published, and that needed consultations could be made by phone instead of by mail.
The action could cut the time needed for publishing an article from several months to several weeks.
