Previously, reporting of such cases had been voluntary, according to a spokesman for the department, Fran-ces Tarlton.
She said that reports had been filed voluntarily, but that officials had decided that mandatory reporting would provide more accurate statistics.
The rule applies to anyone who identifies a case of AIDS, including doctors, hospital employees and local health officials. California is the only other state that requires mandatory reporting of AIDS. All reporting to the Federal Government is voluntary.
The names of AIDS victims will be kept confidential, Miss Tarlton said. More than 1,600 cases of AIDS have been reported nationwide since 1979, including 779 cases in New York State, according to the National Centers for Disease Control.
Of those cases, 720 occurred in New York City, and the City Health Department estimates that the number of cases is rising by two each day. The mortality rate has been about 36 percent.
